I get to use my RV tag again!
Jul 31st, 2010 by Cait

My birthday present to myself – thanks Mom & Grandmother (who don’t read the blog and Do Not Approve of This Camper Nonsense). :D

She’ll need a lot of work, but has already had most of the really hard parts done (mouse sh!t removal, major leak repair, and stripped down on the interior) but she’s going to be just perfect for me and plenty light to tow with my Pontiac Vibe. (I love my car, I can’t believe they aren’t making them anymore! Boo!)

The camper is a mystery camper- title and registration are LONG lost, but I suspect may be a Winnebago from 1962-1964 or a Midjet that’s even a bit older than that. (The Winnebago is somewhat more likely numerically, but I believe Mid-Jets may have been made in Texas or OK as I’ve seen a number of others for sale locally.) She’s 10′ and features a dinette, tiny closet that previously housed a portapotty, and a counter where a stove sat on top, which PROBABLY had an icebox mounted underneath (but which has been ripped out. Plans are still pending, and Jessica and I are going to pick it up on Monday!

A turtle house of my own….
Oct 1st, 2009 by Cait

(This is a slightly re-worked post from the original incarnation of Gypsy Arts on Blogspot.) My friend Nancy Wright calls RVs ‘turtlehouses’, as in, the house that you take with you when you go places. :) I love the description, and I think it’s really evocative of the thing I love about RVs- a way to see the world and still sleep in your own bed every night behind a nice solid door.

Places I wanna go
Oct 1st, 2009 by Cait

I’ve been really enjoying the Ken Burns “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” documentary on KERA (my local NPR affliate) this week- so many beautiful places. I’ve especially loved the bits on Rocky Mountain National Park, where I used to travel every summer with my parents and little brother.

The National Parks aren’t generally dog-friendly though as far as hiking with dogs, which is perfectly reasonable (I always scoop and keep dogs on the trail,  but I know way too many folks (and a lot of more casual pet owners who just drag the dog along). (Future post in that, I suspect.)  And while Kaylee (service dog) is allowed in no-pets areas as long as she won’t impact the ecology of the area or otherwise impact it’s function, Lizzie’s not. So I’m planning to do more in the way of Forest Service and BLM lands.

I’ll expand this post in the future, I suspect, or make a page of it. Right now, it’s not got any real specifics, just places I want to go…. I’ll add those too, someday. :)

My goal is NOT to do all these in een the next two years. I’d like to plan on staying at least a month in most of these places, if not two (with some exceptions for some of the expensive ones). This list is just a starting place for future research.

  • High desert in New Mexico, Arizona, and/or Colorado
  • The rocky hill-and-arroyo country in southeastern Idaho where I went on Outward Bound.
  • The Oregon Coast (again :) )
  • Eastern Oregon
  • Baja Penninsula (probably not unless I’ve got a group to travel with, though)
  • Maine
  • New York – both upstate out in the western half where I didn’t get to explore much, and I’d really like to explore Long Island, too, although it’s too expensive to stay long.
  • Cape Hatteras & the coast of the Carolinas
  • the west coast of florida
  • florida keys
I’m not THAT fickle!

I haven’t totally abandoned my first love, watercolors.  See?

This little watercolor design is the first one I’ve done featuring a retro-style RV. :) It’s a 1.5″ square and is available as a pendant, ornament, or magnet.

I’ve got an Airstream one in progress (and a teardrop!), but I’m not happy with the color on the aluminum skin yet.

Non-art post – why gypsy arts?
Sep 22nd, 2009 by Cait

For those who don’t know, the new site/business name is because well, I’m sort of a gypsy at heart. In the last 9 years, I’ve lived in four states, and other than the moving in and out part, I’ve really adored getting to see different parts of the country and meet new people.  I love travelling, and I want to do more of it. At the same time, I value my own space, and my own comfy bed, and well… it’s hard to travel cheaply when you have two dogs to board!

So this is what I want to do… Read the rest of this entry »
